Words From a Father to His Daughter (From the Makeup Aisle) | Kelly M. Flanagan

Recently there has been a movement in the beauty industry towards campaigns around “natural beauty” and “self love.” Most notably the Dove and Aerie brands have struck a cord with their movement for self-esteem and the real women campaigns respectively. Yet with all this going on I still remain skeptical. Whilst it is great some major brand somewhere has at least considered stopping the promotion of completely unrealistic body image and ridiculous expectations for the feminine figure, we are still clinging to the concept that there is indeed something we can purchase to make us truly beautiful, desirable, and now real. Alas, the beauty industry remains a socially sanctioned and institutionalized shame factory. And even I am admittedly consumed by it.
